Book Review - Broken Dreams

Image
Book title : Broken Dreams - A Callipur Murder Mystery Author : Aditya Banerjee Cover : The cover shows a car in a garage in the background and a newspaper in the foreground. The book opens up in Callipur with an introduction detailing in  which year the story is set along with relevant actualities pertaining to that period so that the reader can see herself in the exact time period. Next thing which I liked was the fact that  each chapter was dedicated to a character. Each chapter reveals different layers of the attributed  character all the while building the rising action of the plot. The narration is no-nonsense and to the point. The murder happens at the end of the first chapter after which the book is unputdownable. New characters are introduced for the next five chapters while the case is under investigation.  the reader's mind is still trying to guess who is the suspect. The remaining chapters are now dedicated to specific events which eventually brings closure to the

Book Review - A Slice of Life

Image
Book title : A Slice of Life Author : Smita Das Jain   A Slice of Life is a collection of stories of different lengths, ranging from flash fictions to short stories.  The book greets you with Rendezvous with its sweet twist, then Parched gives you a ray of hope. Forever love was one of my favourites with the suspense well built up till the end. My heart will go on reminds you to keeps a check on blind expectations. The humorous section was equally fascinating. When there is a will features a wife who always has her way in her new house and her tribulations with her bathtub.  Warning! Computer virus spreads to humans was quite an out of the box idea. Go back home where you belong showcases the intricacies of a complicated relationship and how it changes over time.  The other side is a story to ponder upon since we often judge people at face value. My favourite picks were:  Forever Love ,  Where there is a will  and  The other side. The stories were really like slices of delic

It shows a wolf facing a little girl on a full moon starry night, already giving you a gist of the protagonists in the story. We meet her in the school premises which instantly transports us to the nostalgic Lanes of our own school days. The Jar

Gusty winds howled loudly outside while Sonia tossed and turned in bed, trying to weather the storm of emotions churning within her. Her mind drowned in a whirlpool of nostalgia, two years ago, on a similar stormy night, she was on the seventh sky after Ray had professed his love for her. Now the same sky rippled with thunder and lightning. She stood and gazed at her reflection in the mirror, “Maybe I am not as attractive as before,” she whispered, her warm breath condensing on the mirror surface, blurring her reflection.  She wiped it away, while being swept to another memory…tracing hearts on foggy car windows after a steamy love exchange under the monsoon. How she missed those idyllic trysts! *** “Sonia it seems you didn’t sleep a wink!”her friend Sarah quipped, “Don’t tell me you have been stalking Ray again.” “Life is not the same without him. I don’t show interest in doing anything now…we always did every together.” “Come on Sonia ,it’s been eight freaking months after your bre

Book Review of Ella

Image
Book Review of Ella Ella is written by a Mauritian Author - Mrs Pushmaotee Fowdur Subrun. The book cover speaks to you and gives you an insight about the book being on world travel and adventure. It features a lady surrounded with landmarks of different countries and a globe. The story unfolds with Ella making a startling discovery and becoming a sleuth on her own. It then culminates in a travelling adventure for the protagonist.   I started reading the book when I had travel plans and it certainly made me anticipate my travel more. You accompany Ella on her expeditions to various countries and feel as though you are there with her experiencing the culture and highlights of each place she visits. After her globe-trotting adventure, the book ends with a voyage within herself- Realisation of self . This book is perfect for a light read and if you want a travelling book without much drama. When The Lightning Stopped

Image
A new patient came in today, right next to me. Her parents said she has a serious illness which needed thorough treatment. She is a cute girl, in her twenties am guessing. She had jet black lush locks cascading till the small of her waist. A cute dimple formed on her freckled left cheek as she forced a smile when her parents waved her goodbye. Stella This place seems cold. I miss my duvet bed and plush teddies. They told me they would bring it to me. Two weeks have gone by, but no one came to visit me. The food is not same. I wonder how many days I have to be admitted here. I miss my room. I miss Viviana. Today she was wheeled in again with the electrode marks. I wondered if these frequent shock treatment did her any good. I had seen agitated patients being given those. But she was different. Since she came she was always calm. Sad but calm. No trait of aggressiveness or delusion. She would always be writing letters. She would gi

Make Up

“It’s alright,” she said, Concealing her bruises with foundation.   “Am fine,” she said, Gracefully lining her puffed eyelids.   “All good,” she said Applying lipstick on her trembling wounded lips   “Not bad,” she said Dabbing blush on her listless haggard face.   “Am okay”, she said Wiping a lone tear before it rolled down her cheeks.   This was her daily routine- a beguile Hiding her strifes, she would smile.   One more blow, one more slap till she was sore And she could bear it no more.   Her woman power she unleashed, Her fears she vanquished.   And in her billowing saree bid an adieu To the manipulative aristocratic milieu.
